Wangari Maathai

The following e-mail was originally posted on March 1, 2018 Today, March 1, is the beginning of Women's History Month. Coming the day after the conclusion of Black History Month, I have chosen Wangari Maathai, the first African woman to win the Nobel Peace Prize, as my first historical person of interest.  I especially like the comments of the Nobel committee that Wangari Maathai "thinks globally and acts locally."  It is a philosophy that is dear to my heart. The Nobel Peace Prize 2004 Wangari Maathai Share this: 209 Wangari Maathai - Facts Wangari Muta  Maathai Born:   1 April 1940 , Nyeri, Kenya Died:   25 September 2011 , Nairobi, Kenya Residence at the time of the award:  Kenya Prize motivation:  "for her contribution to sustainable development, democracy and peace" Field:  humanitarian work Prize share:  1/1 Sustainable Development, Democracy and Peace Wangari Maathai was the ...

The Mirage of Knowledge

The following email was originally posted on March 9, 2018 Received this article recently: https://www.harvardmagazine.com/2018/03/death-of-expertise-by-tom-nichols It is only another confirmation that we have descended into a quagmire of darkness and ignorance.  However, it also seems to me a call for those who have tasted the "light" to share that light with others, and in the process of doing so, to lifting us out of the abyss.   Terras Irradient. International Women's Day: Selma James

The following e-mail was posted on March 9, 2018 Yesterday was International Women's Day, and this month is Women's History Month.  In recognition of both yesterday, and all the days of this month, I commend to you Selma James as a woman whose career seems to epitomize what an "International Woman" should be.  The following is a brief bio for Selma James and, at the very end, is a letter she signed from ten years ago that still has some resonance for today. Peace, Everett "Skip" Jenkins *Selma James, the co-author of the women's movement classic  The Power of Women and the Subversion of the Community , was born in Brooklyn, New York (August 15). Selma James  (b.  Selma Deitch ; formerly  Weinstein ; August 15, 1930, Brooklyn, New York), is a co-author of the women's movement  classic  The Power of Women and the Subversion of the Community  (with Mariarosa Dalla Costa ), co-founder of the International Wages for Housewor...

Hawking, Einstein and Pi Day

The following e-mail was originally posted on March 14, 2018 I note with some sadness the passing of Stephen Hawking, the scientist who rivals the great Albert Einstein with regards to his renown https://www.nytimes.com/2018/03/14/obituaries/stephen-hawking-dead.html While I note the passing with sadness, I also  am struck by some remarkable coincidences surrounding the timing of Professor Hawkings death.   For those who are mathematically inclined, today, the day of Hawking's death, is a special day.  Today, March 14, is known as Pi Day, the day that many celebrate that mysterious mathematical constant https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pi https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pi_Day So for some who are mathematically inclined, the fact that Hawking died on Pi Day seems to have some significance.  This significance is bolstered by the fact that Pi Day also happens to be the birthday of Albert Einstein  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Albert_Ein...

World Sleep Day, Saint Patrick's Day, and Global Recycling Day

The following e-mail was posted on March 16, 2018 Today, March 16, 2018, is World Sleep Day https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_Sleep_Day For all who suffer from sleep deficiencies, I strongly encourage you to address the issues now.  Sleep, I find, is one of the most healthy things you can do.   Tomorrow, March 17, 2018, is Saint Patrick's Day.  For those of us with a bit of Irish blood flowing through our veins there is great joy that comes with celebrating the day. However, whether you be Irish or not, please do wear a bit of the green and partake of whatever beverage you will https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saint_Patrick%27s_Day Finally, March 18, 2018, is the first ever Global Recycling Day so whatever green you wore for St. Paddy's Day, you can keep the "green theme" by striving to keep the green in the blue-green world that we know. http://www.waste360.com/recycling/first-ever-global-recycling-day-aims-raise-awareness-about-seventh-res...

A Celtic Weekend

The following e-mail was originally posted on March 16, 2018 As I mentioned in a previous email, tomorrow is Saint Patrick's Day, a day when many around the globe celebrate aspects of Irish culture.  As the sun sets here in the West, I am also mindful that March is still Women's History Month, and keeping with my theme of celebrating women, I would be remiss in not concluding today's message with my favorite group of Irish women... the singing group known as Celtic Woman.  Granted these ladies may not be considered to be "historical" figures but Celtic Woman has undergone a number of personnel changes over the years, and while it is still a fine group, I still have a fondness for the originals.  And thus, in the videos that follow, you will see the original members of the group singing the classics that enchanted me so many years ago.  Perhaps, they will enchant you too. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HsCp5LG_zNE&list=PLRAb2unuFFd3HtV6BKPBNz0-Bs...
