Valhalla Responses: Part One

I happened to have gone to college with a group of extraordinary guys. The email thread on my "Valhalla" post shows some of what always amazed me about them.

Wonders never cease. It is a small world after all ... and, it seems, that we are all connected in one way or another.

I thought every Amherst alum, especially those from the mid-70s, knew that Cullen Murphy '74 wrote the Prince Valiant comic strip for decades, first with his late father and then continuing it himself. And Cullen recently served years as president of Amherst's Trustees, so alums of all generations would have seen that mentioned.
The Amherst - Valiant connection may have no significance, but it surely "clicks" widely among our alumni.
Anyway, if anyone really does investigate further and learns anything juicy, Cullen himself would probably be interested - or at least, amused for a minute.

Maybe, just maybe, this was what they were thinking of when they named us the Valiants. I shall have to investigate further.Skip

Wow! Only we aged ones can understand the meaning of this reply. Amazing. I have to chuckle.

Perhaps they had an endorsement deal from the Plymouth Motors.

to better refresh my memory, I revisited my junior high school yearbook. The
title of the yearbook is Valhalla and on the cover there is the image of a
Viking. Now, in 1968, the sports teams at Victor Valley Junior High were
called the Valiants. I was never quite sure what a Valiant is. I think it
had more to do with being courageous in some form or fashion. However,
whatever a Valiant is, the image that seemed to adorn a lot of our team spirit
was a Viking image. After all, Vikings were an aggressive war like folk and
our sports teams tended to want to emulate them.
